About this work
Pedro Domecq de la Riva, Sotogrande 1977
A man in a straw hat leans against the door of a silver-gray sports car with a black top, one leg slightly bent, a polo mallet in his hand like a walking stick. He wears a blue-and-white striped shirt, white breeches and tall brown boots, and smiles. Behind him a flat field runs off under a pale sky; bracelets gleam on his wrist.
Pedro Domecq de la Riva had himself photographed in Sotogrande in 1977 with a polo mallet. Slim Aarons puts him against a car instead of on a horse, and that turns the mallet into a prop rather than a tool. The upright format gives him his full length, from hat to boots, and the cool silver of the bodywork brings out the warm brown of leather and skin.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
