About this work
Actors In Antibes, 1969
A woman in a flower-print bikini stands laughing on a small ladder in the water, her hands on the rail. On the left a tanned man with blond hair sits on the rock, on the right a dark-haired man on the edge of a jetty, both in swim trunks with their feet almost in the water. Behind them the green water fills the whole picture.
Actor Kirk Douglas, left, with Louis Jourdan and Jourdan's wife Quiquie in the water at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes on the French Riviera, August 1969. There is no sky and no hotel to be seen; the water is the whole background. So everything focuses on the triangle of faces, the two men high at the sides and the woman lower in the middle, all three turned toward the lens.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
