About this work
Boating In Antigua, 1960
On a white beach a man in black swim trunks hoists the sail of a small white sailboat, both arms raised on the line, head tilted back. The sail is white and light blue, with a black fish at the top. On the right a man in a white polo and shorts holds a rope; behind them a woman stands in the shallows and a two-master lies at anchor.
Actor Hugh O'Brian, at left, hoisted the sail of a dinghy on Antigua in the West Indies in 1960. Aarons photographs from low and close, so the sail slants upward out of the frame and its blue almost spills over into the sky and sea. O'Brian's tensed pose is the only hard thing in an otherwise relaxed scene: the second man watches calmly, the woman in the water waits.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
