About this work
Lili Livi, Lake Como circa 1960
Under a canopy of terracotta-red cloth with a frayed white hem and tassels, a young woman sits among the cushions of a boat. She wears a blue blouse with a white landscape pattern, a pink skirt and bracelets of pink beads, and looks calmly into the lens. Behind her shoulder lies the lake, with wooded shores, houses and mountains in the haze.
According to the caption, Lili Livi posed by Lake Como around 1960; she was the daughter of Madame Camilo Livi. The picture is built in layers of color: the warm red of the canopy at the top, the cool blue of blouse and water in the middle, the pink of skirt and beads at the bottom. Her direct gaze holds those layers together, while the landscape on the right fades into the haze.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
