About this work
Wendy Vanderbilt, Palm Beach 1964
A young woman in a light blue headscarf sits at a glass table strewn with purple petals and looks gravely into the camera. She wears a colorful blouse in yellow, red and green. In front of her stand a cup and saucer, a small bowl of lemons and a vase of yellow flowers; behind her paintings hang and stand among palms and tall white candles.
Socialite Wendy Vanderbilt, at home in Palm Beach, Florida, in 1964. Everything in this room is busy: paintings in different styles, palm fronds, flowers, candles, the scattered petals, the colorful blouse. Precisely for that reason her face works. It is the only calm plane, right in the center, and her gaze gives nothing away. Aarons lets the surroundings tell who she is and lets her stay silent.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
