About this work
Hotel Taormina, Sicily 1975
A pool lies among the rocks on the coast, surrounded by orange and yellow parasols on a green terrace. Guests lie at the edge and swim in the pool; others are already bobbing in the sea. Motorboats and pedal boats move over the deep blue water, and one boat draws a white streak. At the top left a staircase climbs over the rocks.
The seaside pool at the Hotel Taormina in Taormina, Sicily, August 1975. Seen from the slope, the pool merges with the coastline: the railing follows the rock, and just beyond it the sea begins. Aarons chooses that high vantage point to show the difference between two kinds of water, the light turquoise of the pool against the dark blue behind it, with swimmers in both.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
