About this work
Tres Vidas, Acapulco 1975
Under a pergola of dark beams a handful of guests sit on low stools around a round bar, a few of them in white straw hats. Behind the counter two men stand among bottles and a large flower arrangement. Through the arch behind them you see a swimming pool and palms. On the pale floor in front, the lattice draws a grid of shadow.
In February 1975 guests sought the shade at Tres Vidas, a private members club in Acapulco, Mexico. The photograph is built symmetrically, with the arch exactly in the middle and a staircase on either side, but the light breaks that order. The grid of shadow on the floor is sharper than the people at the bar and takes up almost half the picture. The guests themselves are small, almost an afterthought.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
