About this work
Swimming In Spain, S'Agaro 1970
A narrow channel between rocks runs from the bottom of the frame out to the open sea. The water is so clear that the stones below show green and gray. Four swimmers lie in the water, one in red and one in blue trunks, most with fins. On top of the cliff a round pavilion stands on a stone wall; at left a white tower rises above the trees.
Swimming and snorkeling in the bay at the Hostal de la Gavina in S'Agaro on the Costa Brava, July 1970. In this upright image the channel works like a pointer: the rocks at left and right squeeze the water together and send the eye from the four swimmers at the bottom to the deep blue at the back. Sea and sky end up almost the same color, so the cove seems to run out into nothing.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
