About this work
Safra Estate, Villefranche-sur-Mer 1991
Across a garden full of flowering borders you look down past a terracotta balustrade to a bay with boats and a hilly peninsula reaching into the sea. Umbrella pines and slender cypresses stand left and right. In the foreground low hedges and gray edgings line beds of white, yellow, red and purple; beyond, the coast lies in a blue haze.
A view from the garden of La Leopolda, the estate of the banker Edmond J Safra and his wife Lily in Villefranche-sur-Mer, in the south of France, July 1991. There is no one in the image; the garden has to be the owners' portrait. Aarons builds it in three bands, flowers, balustrade and sea, and the balustrade is the seam: everything in front of it is laid out, everything behind it is landscape.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
