About this work
Swimming In Bermuda, 1977
From high up the mast you look straight down into turquoise water, so clear that the light plays through it in ripples. A woman in a black bikini floats on her back, arms spread wide. To the left a red flag with the Union Jack in the corner and a white pennant flutter; at the bottom lies the deck, and the shadow of the mast falls on the water.
According to the caption, guests of Sidney Gould aboard the Sea Quest took a dip off Bermuda in September 1977. The vantage point was high above the deck. As a result the horizon disappears and the sea becomes a field of color, in which the swimmer seems small and free-floating. The strip of deck at the bottom reminds us how far she has drifted from the boat.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
