About this work
Gucci Pooch, Venice 1978
From a black bag with camel-colored leather pokes the head of a shaggy little dog, tongue hanging out. On the leather tag at the front it says Gucci. A hand with heavy gold rings and red nails holds the handles; behind it a coral-red dress falls below the bag. Of the woman carrying it you see nothing else, only a stretch of pavement.
A woman carried her dog in a Gucci bag through Venice in September 1978, the caption reports. Nothing of the city is visible, and of the woman only a hand and a dress. Slim Aarons framed so tightly that the little dog becomes the main subject. That crop is what makes it funny: the brand, the rings and the red nails say everything about its owner, while the dog hangs calmly in between.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
