About this work
Bettina Graziani, Costa Smeralda 1964
In a white hammock with long fringes, a woman lies reading, a pink scarf around her head and an orange dress with a floral pattern. The hammock is strung between an olive tree and the white wall of a house with blue-green shutters. On the stones below stand two wicker poufs with newspapers and a rattan table with a cup and a small glass of flowers.
According to the caption, Bettina Graziani rested in a hammock on the Costa Smeralda in Sardinia in 1964. Slim Aarons held the camera low and straight in front of the hammock, which spans the whole image like a broad white arc. Everything that belongs to the afternoon is laid out beneath it: the newspapers, the cup, the flowers. It is a still life with a reading woman in it.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
