About this work
Rhode Island Surfers, September 1965
In front, two boys wade waist-deep through the water, their boards beside them, one of them in yellow swim trunks. To their right a surfer glides over a small wave, one arm stretched out in front of him. On the beach beyond, people lie sunbathing in front of a long row of cabanas; on the hill behind stands a white house with tall chimneys.
Surfers off the coast of Rhode Island in September 1965, as the caption has it. Nothing very spectacular happens here: the waves are low, and the two boys in front are still on their way to deeper water. The picture is built in layers: at the bottom the water with the boys and the surfer finding his balance with an outstretched arm, above that the beach with the bathers in front of the cabanas, and the white house as the end point at the top.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
