About this work
Dining In Gstaad, 1961
On the sunny terrace of a mountain lodge, guests sit packed close at wooden tables, some in ski sweaters, one man at the front in a red jacket. On the tables stand glasses, a bread basket and a jug. A man in a gray sweater walks between the tables toward the lodge. To the left two spruces rise in front of snowy peaks under a clear blue sky.
The caption mentions holidaymakers at a ski lodge in Gstaad, Switzerland, in March 1961. The upright format gives the sky almost half the picture, and the spruces and mountain peaks stand out sharply against it. Down below it is the opposite: tables, hats, elbows. Slim Aarons set the space of the mountains and the bustle of the meal one above the other, and the empty sky makes the terrace feel all the fuller.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
