About this work
Sugarbush Skiing, Vermont 1969
In the middle of the slope stands a bar of piled-up snow. Bottles stand in a row on the counter beside a checked cloth; behind it a bartender in a cap pours. A skier in a cream jacket stands at the bar; to the left a woman with the number 11 on her back waits, glass in hand. In the background, chairlift seats hang between bare trees.
The caption describes an outdoor bar at Sugarbush, a mountain resort in Vermont, in March 1969. What the photograph shows is how little it takes: a bank of snow, a wooden sign with the resort's emblem, and the bottles are ready. The counter runs at an angle through the picture and divides it into two halves, those waiting on the left and on the right the guests sitting in the snow.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
