About this work
Cannes Cannes Girls, 1958
Two young women in bikinis pose against a white, richly ornamented façade with balconies. The one on the left stands upright in light blue, a red-orange straw hat on her head and a thin chain around her neck. The one on the right sits on a white ledge in a floral-print bikini, her short blonde curls in the sun, holding a straw hat with a red ribbon on her knee.
The caption mentions two holidaymakers who posed in front of the Carlton Hotel in Cannes, in the south of France, in 1958. Of the hotel you see only a stretch of façade, and that is enough. The balconies and white stucco form a crisp backdrop, and the two hats, one red, the other with a red ribbon, rhyme diagonally across the square frame. Two identical red lips complete the rhyme.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
