About this work
Barone Bettino Ricasoli, Siena 1983
Among the vines a gray-haired man holds a glass of red wine up to the light and studies it with a critical eye. His camel jacket hangs over his shoulders, his tie sits tight. In front of him stands a small table with a white cloth, three bottles, a glass and a basket full of blue grapes. Behind him the vineyards climb the hill toward a castle.
Winemaker Barone Bettino Ricasoli posed in a vineyard in Siena in 1983, with three bottles and a basket of grapes beside him. According to the caption, his family set down the modern recipe for Chianti. Slim Aarons lined everything up: the grapes in the basket, the bottles on the table, the glass in his hand and behind it the vines on the hills. In a single image you read the path from vine to glass.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
