About this work
San Diego Gulls, 1960
Gulls hang scattered in a blue sky streaked with cirrus, wings spread or just tilted. At the bottom the surf runs in a narrow white line across the beach, where another row of birds stands on the wet sand. Most of the square is sky; the sea is only a dark band just above the lower edge.
Slim Aarons photographed the gulls above a beach in San Diego, California, in 1960. There is not a person in the frame, and that makes it quiet. The composition lives on proportion: three quarters sky, a thin ribbon of water and sand, and between them the birds like loose punctuation marks. Because each one flies a different way, the eye keeps looking for the next.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
