About this work

Fishing Boats, Sicily 1975

Wooden rowing boats lie close together in the harbor, in red, blue, white and green, their colors rippling in the dark water. In the foreground lies a green-and-white boat with a number on the bow. At the top a man in a red shirt and green trousers leans over the side of a white boat, busy with something inside.

Slim Aarons took the picture in 1975 in a Sicilian harbor, with a fisherman at work in his boat. The fisherman is small and far away; the boats themselves are the subject. Aarons stacks them one above the other in the upright format, each hull a horizontal band of color, so that the image reads almost like a painting of stripes. The man's red shirt echoes the red boat below.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
