About this work
Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, 1981
From high above, a green headland with white rocks drops steeply into dark blue water. On the point stands a semicircular building with orange tile roofs; behind it lies a large swimming pool among palms, surrounded by rows of loungers. At the foot of the rock a beach club with parasols juts out, with a jetty and small boats. A rope with buoys runs diagonally through the water.
The Monte-Carlo Beach Hôtel on the Pointe de la Vieille in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, in southeastern France, August 1981. Slim Aarons photographed from high above the sea, so that the water takes up more than half the picture. That dark mass makes the buildings small: hotel, pool and beach club cling to the edge of the rock, and the few white boats show how deep the blue is.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
