About this work
Two-Tone Dress, Beverly Hills 1960
A young woman with her hair pinned up stands on a lawn in full sunlight, her head turned slightly to one side. She wears a sleeveless dress with a white bodice, a bow at the waist and a full, light green skirt, plus a necklace of stones. Behind her a garden of clipped hedges and flower beds descends toward tall palms and dark trees.
Mrs Christopher Ward posed in 1960 in Arthur Cameron's garden in Beverly Hills, California, in a long dress by Gustave Tassell: a bodice of white silk faille and an apple-green skirt of peau d'ange. It is a fashion image in a private garden. What carries it is scale: the palms tower far above her, yet thanks to the low camera angle she remains the vertical axis of the picture, as straight as the trunks behind her.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
