About this work
Catching The Sun In Cortina, March 1976
On a wooden terrace high above the valley, five people lie and sit in the sun, slouched against the cushions. In front of them stands a table with a large platter of cold cuts, lemons and fruit, bottles in an ice bucket, and glasses. Tulips and geraniums bloom in planters along the balustrade; beyond lie the town and the snowy mountains under a deep blue sky.
Giuliana Gerolinetto, Maria Cristina Giaconelli, Marina Aletti and Cristina Gerolinetto sat in the sun in March 1976 on the open terrace of El Toula, overlooking Cortina d'Ampezzo and the Dolomites. The image lives on the contrast between near and far: sunglasses, bare shoulders and a full table in front, snow and rock faces beyond. The wooden beams of the terrace divide the panorama into panels, so the mountains hang there like separate scenes.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
