About this work

Marquess of Waterford, Curraghmore circa 1970

On a gravel path before a large gray ivy-covered house, a donkey stands harnessed to a small black cart with red wheels. In the cart sits a woman in a red sweater and headscarf; beside it stands a man in tweed and a flat cap. Two little boys in pale yellow sweaters stand by the donkey; one strokes its nose. Red shrubs and dark conifers frame the house.

The Marquess and Marchioness of Waterford with their elder son, the Earl of Tyrone, in the grounds of their home, Curraghmore, County Waterford, Ireland, circa 1970. Slim Aarons placed the family on the gravel path that runs straight to the front door. The house stands exactly behind the family, and the donkey draws the eye to the left, to the children. Formal and relaxed at once: a country house as backdrop, a donkey cart for transport.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
