About this work
Lunch At Merle's, Acapulco 1966
Beneath tall palm trunks a party sits at a laid table with a flowered tablecloth and white wrought-iron chairs. A woman in a pink headscarf sits with her back to the camera; opposite her sit guests in white, yellow and a bright pink dress, and a woman in a white cap. Two waiters in white jackets stand behind them. The light falls filtered between the leaves.
The English actress Merle Oberon, second from right, with lunch guests at her villa La Consentida in Acapulco, 1966. Slim Aarons stood at a distance and let the palm trunks fill the upper part of the picture. The party thus sits small beneath the trees, in the shade, while the light falls only here and there on a shoulder or a glass. It feels less like a staged lunch than a moment you walk past.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
