About this work
Cavallo Marina, Corsica circa 1984
From the air you look down on a long, narrow bay between wooded hills, full of moored sailing yachts and motorboats. Along the left bank houses and a road climb up to a town on a white cliff plateau, its walls dropping steeply to the sea. One boat draws a white wake across the dark water; farther out lies the open sea with scattered sails.
The caption calls this a quiet marina on the Mediterranean island of Cavallo, Corsica, circa 1984; in the picture the harbor is full of boats with a town above it. The photograph was taken from a great height, and so the harbor becomes a floor plan: the jetties form a comb in the water, the boats a row of white dots. The natural inlet does the work of a quay; the buildings follow the line that the water had already drawn.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
