About this work
Skiers In St. Moritz, March 1963
Two young men, one in a blue anorak and the other in a red jacket, walk straight toward the camera, skis over their shoulders and poles loosely in hand. Both wear sunglasses and they are laughing. Behind them rises a tall hotel with balconies and a snowy roof, and on the slope beyond a long line of skiers heads downhill.
Slim Aarons photographed these skiers in March 1963 in St. Moritz, Switzerland. The caption names no one; these are people coming back after a day on the slopes. The photograph works through depth: two figures in front who almost step out of the frame, a third behind them, and then ever smaller dots high up the mountain. One shot tells both the end of a descent and the bustle of the whole village.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
