About this work
Hotel Du Cap-Eden-Roc, Antibes 1978
Over the edge of a tiled roof you look down on a swimming pool among the rocks above the sea. On the terraces around it, white loungers and parasols stand in long rows, with guests lying in the sun. In the foreground people sit at laid tables on a restaurant terrace. On the right the deep blue sea stretches to a headland with a white house and a single sailboat.
Slim Aarons photographed the guests around the pool of the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, on the French Riviera, in August 1978. He chose the viewpoint of someone watching from the roof, and the orange roof tiles at the bottom of the frame are not an intrusion but a threshold: they place you outside the group. So you see life around the pool as a playing field, easy to survey and just out of reach.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
