About this work
Pool By The Sea, Antibes 1969
A wide view across terrace, pool and sea. White parasols stand in an arc over the rocks, and in front, beneath the largest shades, guests sit at tables with yellow cloths. A swimmer floats in the green pool. On the right the water stretches out to the hazy horizon, with a sailboat, two yachts and a floating raft.
Guests around the swimming pool at the Hotel du Cap Eden-Roc in Antibes, August 1969. Where the upright view of this terrace looks steeply down, this picture is horizontal and wider, and the sea takes up half the frame. That shifts the balance: the terrace with its parasols becomes a small, busy island of people set against a large, still expanse of water, and the boats on the horizon make that emptiness measurable.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
