About this work
Portofino Villa, Casa Montefino 1977
From high on the hill you look over cypresses and dense greenery to a bay full of yachts, with a wooded headland and a villa on top. At the bottom right lies a turquoise swimming pool with swimmers in the water and a row of blue loungers along the edge. A sand path winds uphill along a lawn to a cottage with a thatched roof.
In August 1977 Slim Aarons photographed the guests at the pool of the Casa Montefino, the villa of Klaus Pudel above the harbour of Portofino. Here he stepped back and let the harbour itself join in. The pool slides into the corner, the yachts and the headland take the middle, so that the picture is more about the place than about the company.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
