About this work

Relaxing In Kenya, 1958

A woman in a white bathing cap sits in a wicker chair at the edge of a swimming pool, in a checked bikini, her legs stretched out over a dark tiled edge. She looks into the camera. Behind her three people swim in the water. Farther on stand shrubs and trees, and in the distance a plain with water stretches out under a blue sky.

A woman in a wicker chair by a swimming pool in Kenya, 1958. Slim Aarons placed her close to the lens and the swimmers far away, so that the chair almost slides forward out of the picture. The blue of the water, the tiles and the sky keeps the picture in one tone; only her white cap and her skin light up. She looks back, and that turns a garden scene into a portrait.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
