About this work
Les Sophores, Saint-Tropez 1977
A garden path of stepping stones through the grass climbs in stages toward a white villa, flanked by tall, narrow cypresses. Halfway up, a woman in a yellow jacket and white trousers walks under a yellow umbrella. Shrubs bloom in pink and red along the path, and on the right a broad, round pine stands against a clear sky.
Janine Bril walked through the garden of Les Sophores, her villa in Saint-Tropez on the French Riviera, in August 1977. The cypresses line the path like a guard of honor and draw the eye to the house at the top. Yet it is the small yellow spot in the middle that holds the image: without that umbrella this would have been a garden photograph, but now it is a portrait in which the garden plays the biggest part.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
