About this work
The Butlers, the Bahamas 1971
From above you look down on a large pool whose floor is covered in a pattern of green and blue tiles, like a carpet under water. On a paved terrace between two basins stand a man in a red shirt and a woman in a light blue suit, in front of white loungers. On the left stands a white wooden house with a veranda, surrounded by dense tropical greenery.
Allan and Shirley Butler stood in March 1971 beside the pool of their home Jacaranda in the Bahamas. According to the caption, she was the daughter of Sir Harry Oakes, a well-known Bahamian. The pool is the main character here. The tile pattern fills almost the entire bottom of the photograph, and the two residents stand small and upright on the only dry strip between the basins.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
