About this work
Radio DJ, Greenwich Village 1962
At the front of a crowded club sits a man in a checked jacket and black tie, his hand on an LP with Golden Gassers for a Dance Party on the sleeve, laughing into the camera. Behind him a band in green jackets plays before a red stage curtain, young men dancing on platforms to the left. At tables with red cloths the audience sits packed close.
According to the caption, radio DJ Murray Kaufman listened to a band at a club in Greenwich Village, New York, in 1962. In the photograph he has turned his back on the music. That is what the image carries: behind him everything happens at once, guitars, saxophone, dancers, a room in motion, while he sits still and looks at us. The crowd becomes his backdrop, the record under his hand his calling card.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
