About this work
Antigua Beach Club 1960
On the white sand stands a low screen of woven palm leaf, and towels hang drying over it: one striped in red and white, one checked, a black one and a light blue one. A green air mattress leans in front. Farther on, among tall coconut palms, lies the clubhouse with its thatched roof, green-and-white parasols and guests at tables, with a small stone cottage at right.
The beach club at the Mill Reef Club on Antigua in the West Indies, 1960. Here the building is not at the center but in the background. Aarons puts the drying laundry in the foreground: the towels and the air mattress of guests who have stepped away for a moment. So the photograph tells of how the place is used, not of its architecture. The striped towel is the brightest point in the picture and holds your eye before you see the terrace behind it.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
