About this work
Pagoda Poolhouse, Palm Beach 1985
Behind the pool stands a pavilion with a curved pagoda roof and red columns. At right, on the steps between white plinths with stone pineapples, stand a man in a yellow jacket and white trousers, with a straw hat and cane, and a woman in a white suit under a white parasol. At left a woman in a blue-black swimsuit stands at the edge; three swimmers stand in the water.
Albin and Margo Lykes Holder, at right in the picture, posed with friends in 1985 by the pool of their home in Palm Beach, Florida. The Chinese pagoda poolhouse behind them was designed by John Volk. The picture works like a stage on two levels: below, the water and the guests in swimwear; above, on the landing, the hosts in full dress. The pagoda stands in the middle as a backdrop and makes the difference between the two layers visible.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
