About this work
Marc Stanes, Lyford Cay 1983
A young man stands with his legs apart in a portico, hands on his hips, between two white Ionic columns. He wears a navy blazer with gold-colored buttons and a red pocket square, a white shirt with an open collar, white trousers with a black belt and black loafers. Behind him are a white double door, a yellow wall and a chandelier above the door.
Marc Stanes, photographed in 1983 at Lyford Cay in the Bahamas. The caption says nothing more about him; the picture does the work. Aarons places him exactly on the axis of the door, with the two columns as a frame that repeats his posture: upright, white and symmetrical. His wide stance and outward elbows form a triangle between the straight lines of the columns. The yellow of the wall and the white of his clothes give the portrait a light touch.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
