About this work

Polo World Cup, St. Moritz 1989

Polo players in yellow and red shirts and white helmets gallop after one another across a snowy field, snow flying up behind the hooves. Along the edge stand spectators, advertising boards and a row of flags. Above them rises a mountain wall, dark conifers at its foot and snow in the gullies, against a deep blue sky.

The Polo World Cup in St. Moritz, February 1989. Aarons photographs the game from the side and at a distance, so the players form a low, broken line across the full width of the picture. That horizontal motion is set against the vertical mass of the mountain, which takes up more than half of the frame. The riders seem small and fast as a result, the landscape behind them heavy and still.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
