About this work

Lake Tahoe Trip, Zephyr Cove 1959

Four young women in swimsuits spread out across the glittering water: one in a red canoe, one in a turquoise one, one with a yellow paddle in a white one, and at the back one on a pedal boat with two white floats. Each is heading a different way. Wherever a paddle or a hand touches the surface, the water splashes up.

Zephyr Cove lies on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe; Slim Aarons took this shot there in 1959. Another work with the same caption shows three canoes from directly above. Here the camera sits at an angle and farther back, so the boats form not a row but a loose fan, each pointing a different way. The pedal boat at the back gives the game a fourth, somewhat clumsy participant.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
