About this work
On The Slopes Of Sugrbush, April 1960
Two skiers stand on a snowy ridge, each bending over a pair of skis planted upright in the snow. On the left a woman in a flowered jacket and a white cap, on the right a man in a white sweater, knickers and knee socks, wearing a black pom-pom hat. Ski poles with leather rings lie in front of them; behind, a wooded valley drops away under a blue sky.
Slim Aarons photographed the two in April 1960 on the slopes of the Sugarbush Mountain ski resort in Warren, Vermont, as they inspected their skis. What carries the picture is repetition: two figures in the same bent posture, two pairs of skis as vertical stripes against the sky. Because the camera sits slightly low, the tips rise above the mountain ridge and the skis seem larger than their owners.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
