About this work
Pussyfooting, Jamaica 1958
A woman stands in the surf, wrapped in a red-and-white striped towel that reaches her knees. She wears a straw hat and red lipstick, puts one hand on her hip and holds up a glass with straws in the other. Behind her, sea and sky in the same pale gray-blue almost merge into each other; the horizon is only a faint line.
Actress Dee Hartford, married to film producer Howard Hawks, sipped a Pussyfoot in Jamaica in 1958, a mixture of Jamaican fruit juices. Aarons lets the surroundings almost vanish: sea and sky are so flat and so light that only the towel has color. The broad stripes work as a graphic costume, and the pose with the hand on the hip turns a beach moment into a fashion plate.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
