About this work
Beach At Positano, 1979
You look down along the coast from high above. In the lower part of the picture the beach is packed with parasols in tight rows, blue, red and yellow, with narrow paths between them. Above, the village climbs the mountain, house upon house, around a church with a dome. On the left the dark sea is full of small boats; at the top a cloud hangs around the summit.
Slim Aarons took this aerial shot of sunbathers and parasols on the beach at Positano in 1979, looking north along the coast. The picture works through the contrast between order and wilderness: below, the grid of parasols, set in rows by people; above, the irregular stacking of houses; and behind them the bare rock vanishing into the clouds. The higher you look, the less human order remains.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
