About this work
Cortina d'Ampezzo, March 1988
A line of snowboarders descends a wide, sunny piste beneath a jagged rock face covered in snow. In front are two figures in orange jumpsuits, the lead one with yellow lower legs and sunglasses, arms spread for balance; on the right a third in red and yellow. Farther back, smaller dots in pink, blue and green follow, all the way to the edge of the forest.
Snowboarding in Cortina d'Ampezzo, March 1988, as the caption puts it. What the picture shows is the scale of the setting: the rock face fills nearly half the frame and turns the riders into small flecks of color on a white expanse. Because they enter on a diagonal, from back left to front right, the group seems to flow out of the mountain itself. Against stone, snow and dark conifers, the jumpsuits are the only bright colors.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
