About this work

Bikini Girls, Monte Carlo 1975

Two women in white bikinis stand chatting on a sunny terrace. One wears a white cap, sunglasses and a heavy necklace; the other has short blond hair and clamps a black bag under her arm. Both wear wedge heels with ribbons tied around the ankles. A wicker bag sits on the ground, and behind them sunbathers lie against a salmon-pink facade with a clock.

Monte Carlo, 1975: two women in matching bikinis and shoes, according to the caption. The photograph plays on repetition and difference. From a distance they are twins in white, up close they are not: one has blue soles, the other white, one wears a cap, the other shows her hair. In the background beach life carries on, without anyone looking up.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
