About this work

Arriving In Style, Manalapan circa 1960

A white-and-yellow seaplane rests on its floats in shallow, glassy water. A figure in blue bends down by one of the floats; farther on a man stands calf-deep in the water near the shore, where palms hang over a narrow sandy beach. Above the low horizon white clouds pile up against a deep blue sky, and everything appears twice: plane, man and palms are mirrored in the water.

Mike Phipps came to lunch at the Guinness house in Manalapan, near Palm Beach, around 1960; the picture appeared in A Wonderful Time. Aarons keeps the plane and the man by the shore far apart and the figures small in the frame. That very distance tells the story of the arrival: the aircraft still lies in open water, and the last few yards to land are made on foot.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
