About this work
Zephyria I, Monte Carlo 1970
From above you look into a wooden speedboat moored against a white jetty. Three boys in swimming trunks kneel on the orange cushion at the back; three men stand by the windshield, all looking the same way. The varnished wood gleams, ZEPHYRIA I is lettered on the transom, and a small flag flutters on the aft deck.
Vacationers aboard the Zephyria I in Monte Carlo, August 1970: the caption says no more than that, and no more is needed. The high vantage point turns the boat into a floor plan, with the men at the helm, the boys on the deck and the dark blue water around it like a mount. All six look away from the camera, at something out of frame, and that shared gaze is what holds the composition together.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
