About this work

Venice Gondolier, Venice 1957

A gondolier stands on the stern of his gondola and pushes the long oar through the water, arms taut, his gaze turned to the left. He wears a straw hat with a red band, a loose white shirt over a striped shirt and dark trousers. Behind him the Grand Canal stretches out, with palaces along the quay and a white dome in the distance.

A gondolier on the Grand Canal in Venice, 1957. Slim Aarons stood close to him, almost in the same boat, and photographed from slightly below, so that the man rises above the city. The oar runs as a diagonal from the lower left through the picture and connects his hands to the water. So you see not a figure in a setting, but someone at work.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
