About this work
Beverley Hills Hotel, 1957
The pool fills the lower half of the picture, so still that the striped tents and flagpoles are reflected in it. On the far side, guests lie on green loungers in the sun, and a man in white walks past. A tall yellow-and-white tent with a pointed roof rises above the row of smaller pavilions; behind it stand trees under a clear blue sky.
Vacationers relaxed by the pool of the Beverly Hills Hotel on Sunset Boulevard in California in 1957. Slim Aarons put the camera just above the water and gave the reflection as much room as the reality above it. The big tent is thus drawn twice, once sharp and once trembling. The guests themselves are small and far away; the water is the subject here.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
