About this work

Racquet Club Pool, Acapulco 1961

Three people sit on stools at a pool bar, legs in the clear water; the camera looks steeply down on them. A blonde woman in a pink-and-white bikini drinks through a straw; beside her a man with a blue-and-white striped towel around his neck and a pink floating tray in his lap; behind him a woman in a red two-piece swimsuit. Bottles stand on the bar.

In January 1961 the Swiss bandleader and restaurateur Teddy Stauffer sat with Dorothy Webb and Mrs Charles Rogers in the pool at the Villa Vera Spa & Racquet Club in Acapulco, Mexico. Slim Aarons photographed steeply downward, so the water becomes a pale blue plane in which the light on the bottom trembles. The legs and the stools under water form a second composition beneath the first.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
