About this work
Chateau Saint-Martin, Côte d'Azur 1986
From a hilltop you look out over a green landscape that sinks in layers toward a hazy horizon. On the left of the frame lies the white complex with its round tower and ivy-covered facade, small among olive trees and cypresses. Villas and terraces are scattered across the slopes around it, and in the foreground a large tree with yellow-green leaves fills the bottom of the picture.
This too is the Chateau Saint-Martin in Vence on the Côte d'Azur, in 1986 a luxury hotel and, according to the caption, once a Commanderie of the Knights Templar from the twelfth century. This shot chooses distance. The hotel is only a detail at the edge, and that is exactly how you grasp its position: high above the valley, with a view far across the hills. The building becomes a lookout rather than a facade.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
