About this work
Palm Beach Pagoda, 1985
A white Chinese teahouse with two curving roof tiers and a pointed turret rises against a deep blue sky. In front of it, at the edge of the pool, a woman in white wearing a straw hat sits in a lounge chair. Two women stand talking, one in a yellow sweater and white trousers, the other in red with a printed skirt. Red geraniums stand in pots.
In April 1985, Cynthia Eichler (seated), Vicky Schaft Bruder (center) and Cathy Tankoos posed by the teahouse on Everglades Island in Palm Beach, Florida. The pavilion was designed by Wyeth, King and Johnson. Slim Aarons chose the upright format and gave the building more than half the picture; the three women are small at its foot. The teahouse is the main subject here, and the guests give the scale.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
